Augmented Reality Fluorescence Facilitates Vascular Neurosurgery

The Leica Microsystems (Wetzlar, Germany) GLOW800 augmented reality (AR) fluorescence imaging modality is a comprehensive solution that provides flexible viewing options by combining the high contrast of the ICG fluorescence signal and the white light image to provide a single view of cerebral anatomy. The result is a single, real-time view that provides full depth perception and lack of dark peripheries through image homogenization, supporting clear spatial orientation. In addition, GLOW800 AR provides flexible viewing options, such as three dimensional (3D) displays, streaming, and high definition (HD) recording.

GLOW800 AR is designed to seamlessly integrate with the Leica Microsystems ARveo neurosurgical microscope, ergonomically designed to adapt to the surgeons preferred style of work and body frame by providing a choice of 360° rotation and versatile positioning binoculars, and optimal visualization for the rear assistant with independent fine focus. The lightweight handling and extensive range of movement of the optics carrier limits potential strain from harsh movements, and allows a large 600 mm working distance. ARveo also offers a built-in 31-inch 4K 3D monitor and a cart-mounted 55-inch monitor that enables the entire operating room team to follow the procedure.

“For the past decade Leica Microsystems has been pioneering new fluorescence imaging technologies in partnership with surgeons to advance surgical practices,” said Markus Lusser, President of Leica Microsystems. “GLOW800 and future modalities based on the GLOW AR platform will allow surgeons to perform life-changing neurosurgical interventions with the confidence that they have the best possible visual information right in the field of view.”

“Leica Microsystems is a company that works closely with neurosurgeons to bring new technologies to market that really respond to our needs,” said professor of neurosurgery Cleopatra Charalampaki, MD, PhD, of Cologne Medical Center (Germany). “GLOW800 AR is an exciting new approach which provides a totally new view during vascular neurosurgery. I have excellent spatial orientation and I am impressed with the crisp delineation of vessels. I believe GLOW800 AR fluorescence will have a significant impact on surgical outcomes in the future.”

AR is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified--possibly even diminished rather than augmented--by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality.
