Intelligent Ventilation Assists Respiratory Management of Intubated Patients

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 03 Jun 2010
A fully automatic closed-loop application for intensive care ventilation covers all stages between intubation and extubation of critical care (CC) patients.

The Hamilton-S1 universal ventilator with INTELLiVENT adaptive support ventilation (ASV) offers automatic adjustments according to established CC protocols, measuring lung physiology, respiratory monitoring, capnography (etCO2) and pulse oximetry (SpO2). More...
By automating the support ventilation paradigm, the Hamilton-S1 reduces complexity by guiding decision making and visualizing multifaceted information in an intuitive way. This reduces staff burden by automating routine tasks and adjustments, reducing stress, and increasing the availability of staff at the bedside. Additionally, the system increases patient safety by reducing the potential for mistakes and errors, reducing the risk of escalations and intricacies, applying lung protective rules, and reducing the length of ventilation by adaptive patient settings. The Hamilton –S1 Hamilton with INTELLiVENT ASV is a development of Hamilton Medical (Bonaduz, Switzerland).

ASV technology helps intensivists by adapting to the changing conditions and needs of each patient by delivering the optimal tidal volume safely at the lowest pressure possible, thus combining the benefits of pressure-controlled ventilation with a volume guarantee. ASV also optimizes levels of ventilatory support and carbon dioxide (CO2) removal, allowing the clinician to concentrate on the patient rather than on the device. ASV applies on a breath-by-breath basis, assessing the patient's lung mechanics, optimizing the tidal volume and respiratory frequency combination based on the lung mechanics, thereby achieving optimum tidal volume and respiratory frequency by automatically adjusting mandatory rate and inspiratory pressure.
