A handheld thermometer that reads temperature five centimeters away from the subject's skin (either at the forehead or behind the earlobe) can provide an accurate reading within seconds.

The Sanomedics professional non-contact, talking thermometers permit temperature measurement with no probes, strips, or invasive action required, helping to avoid the spread of disease between patients by limiting contact and cross-contamination. More...
Readings are displayed within seconds, and a 32-measurement memory permits trending. The device displays visual warnings of elevated temperatures, flashing crimson if the patient's temperature is higher than a predetermined level. Temperature is also broadcast aloud in three different languages (English, French, and Spanish), makings the devices accessible and compatible for the visually impaired. The Sanomedics professional non-contact, talking thermometers are products of Sanomedics (Miami, FL, USA).

"This professional diagnostic device will have a positive impact on the way in which public health departments nationwide deliver medical care anywhere in the field, whether in clinics, patient's homes, or at the scene of a public health emergency,” said Keith Houlihan, cofounder and president of Sanomedics.

"The ability to accurately and swiftly assess the potential presence of illness is invaluable,” said Craig Sizer, cofounder and chairman of Sanomedics. "As agencies begin the implementation of healthcare reform, seeking to streamline and improve the efficiency and quality of medical information-handling, these types of diagnostic advances can help immeasurably in reducing the overall cost of care and countering State budget crises in the face of today's challenging economy.”
