Portable Respiratory Support for Adult and Pediatric Patients

By HospiMedica International staff writers

A new lightweight ventilator provides mobile respiratory support, enabling ventilated adult and pediatric users to pursue regular activities with peace of mind. More...

The Puritan Bennett 560 Portable Ventilator is designed for patient comfort, safety, and maneuverability, weighing just 4.5 kg. Powered by a lithium-ion battery, the ventilator provides up to 11 hours of power for extended use, and a real-time battery life indicator shows the remaining charge in hours and minutes. A car adaptor provides additional security when the patient is away from home. The ventilator also tracks patient data, which is essential for the clinician, who can easily transfer data from the ventilator to a personal computer (PC), using a USB disk-on-key. Relevant data includes patient compliance, trend data, and detailed waveforms that can be analyzed using the proprietary Puritan Bennett Respiratory Insight software.

Additionally, by using Nellcor DAR filters with the ventilator, patients can reduce their risk of coming in contact with airborne bacteria and viruses that can cause respiratory illness. The filters help block the inhalation of infectious agents and also help prevent germs from being exhaled into the environment, lessening the risk to family members and caregivers. Ventilator parameters and alarm settings are linked to reduce the risk of clinically inappropriate settings, and an oxygen enrichment solution is available using a low-pressure oxygen source. The Puritan Bennett 560 Portable Ventilator and the Nellcor DAR filters are products of Covidien (Dublin, Ireland), and have received the European Community (EC) Mark of conformity.

"Technologies that fuse mobility and reliability are integral to the advancement of healthcare. The European launch of the Puritan Bennett 560 ventilator is an important step in our efforts to improve patient safety, increase medical efficacy, and enhance healthcare efficiency by making advanced medical technology available in the hospital and home setting,” said Roland Pfleger, vice president and general manager of the Europe, Middle East, and Africa respiratory and monitoring solutions division at Covidien.

"The Puritan Bennett 560 ventilator offers many patient-focused features, like the 11-hour battery life, as well as features that enable clinicians to regulate care and track patient progress,” commented Cesare Gregoretti, M.D., head of the department of anesthesiology at Maria Adelaide Hospital (Torino, Italy). "Features like USB functionality allow better monitoring of a patient's breathing patterns and patient ventilator interaction.”
