Endoscopic System Safely Delivers Capsule Video Camera

The single-use, quick-locking mechanism safely secures the capsule holder to the catheter, while the clear design enables visualization of capsule deployment through the endoscope. Smooth catheter design ensures no damage to the working channel of the endoscope or the capsule.

The catheter of the PillCam Express device is passed through the working channel of the endoscope, and the capsule holder is attached to the distal end of the catheter. The PillCam video capsule is then inserted into the capsule holder and the endoscope is then directed to the desired location in the patient's gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The air-filled syringe is then attached to the proximal end of the catheter and it is depressed to force air into the catheter, gently releasing the capsule into the desired location. The endoscope is then withdrawn and scissors are used to remove the capsule holder. Finally, the catheter is withdrawn from the working channel of the endoscope.

Together with the PillCam Express, Given Imaging (Yoqne'am, Israel) has also launched the PillCam SB 2-EX capsule camera, a small bowel capsule, which extends capsule operating time to a minimum of 12 hours for patients who are confirmed or believed to have slow motility. The company also launched an updated version of its proprietary software program, RAPID 6.3, designed to work with all versions of Microsoft Windows 7, improving user experience and reducing the potential for data errors.
