FDA Okays New Bone Cement

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 20 Feb 2001
A medium-viscosity bone cement has been cleared by the U.S. More...
Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Medium viscosity is preferred by orthopedic surgeons for its versatility and strength. The new bone cement, called VersaBond, uses chemistry similar to other cements on the market but has improved mechanical properties, according to the marketer, Smith & Nephew Orthopedics (Memphis, TN, USA). VersaBond also has superior fatigue strength. It can be used in shoulder, hip, and knee replacement procedures and can be injected or hand-packed into place. The cement can be used with the Genesis II Total Knee System, the Spectron Hip System, Cemented Synergy Hip, Cemented Echelon Revision, and the Conquest Fx Hip System of Smith & Nephew.

"We are very confident in the bone cement we are putting on the market. This product certainly strengthens our overall position in joint reconstruction,” said Larry Papasan, president of Smith & Nephew Orthopedics.
