Vest Airway Clearance System

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 29 May 2003
A new version of The Vest airway clearance system is half the weight and one-third the size of the original, making it about the size of a portable audio system. More...
The system has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Vest 104 system consists of an inflatable vest attached to an air-pulse generator. Using high-frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO), the generator rapidly inflates and deflates the vest, compressing and releasing the chest wall five to 20 times per second to create airflow within the lungs. Its gentle pressure moves trapped mucus from the smaller airways in the lungs to the larger airways, where it can be removed by coughing or suctioning. The action also works to thin thick secretions, making them easier to clear.

The Vest is designed for patients with chronic lung disorders and diseases such as cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These patients need airway clearance to prevent recurrent cycles of respiratory inflammation and infection leading eventually to lung damage. The Vest system enables patients to receive airway clearance at home without the need to depend on caregivers. The system is the product of Advanced Respiratory, Inc. (St. Paul, MN, USA).

"With The Vest system, people are breathing easier. They have access to therapy that fits into their lifestyle, is easy to administer, and most importantly, improves their pulmonary health,” said Elden Russell, president and CEO of Advanced Respiratory.
