Bioengineered Repair Patch for Rotator Cuff

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 02 Apr 2002
A patch designed for use in certain rotator cuff surgeries is comprised of a bioengineered collagen matrix. More...
The patch has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The patch was developed by Organogenesis, Inc. (Canton, MA, USA), in collaboration with Biomet, Inc. (Warsaw, IN, USA) and is made of FortaFlex, the collagen matrix bioengineered by Organogenesis. The company previously developed a living skin substitute called Apligraph for the treatment of foot and leg ulcers. The repair patch provides a resorbable scaffold for the reinforcement of soft tissues that are repaired by sutures and suture anchors during rotator cuff surgery. The patch, optimized for the strength and tissue interaction requirements of this use, will be marketed by Biomet. The company markets products used by musculoskeletal medical specialists.

"We believe the rotator cuff repair patch we have developed with Organogenesis can offer surgeons an innovative alternative to currently available therapies,” said David Nolan, vice president of sales at Arthrotek, a subsidiary of Biomet. "We are already working with Organogenesis to develop additional products for orthopedic applications.”
