Stent System for Small Vessels

A new cobalt chromium micro-stent system is designed for use in small coronary vessels to re-open arteries obstructed by plaque.

This ChromoFlex micro-stent has received the CE Mark and is part of the ChromoFlex range being marketed as a competitive treatment alternative to drug-eluting stents to reduce stenosis. More...
There are currently no cobalt chromium drug-eluting stents on the market, according to DISA Vascular Ltd. (Cape Town, South Africa), which developed the new stents.

Similar to the large-vessel ChromoFlex, the micro-stent has ultra-thin struts. This feature has been shown to reduce stenosis dramatically in various independent clinical studies. This is due to the use of a special cobalt chromium alloy that offers numerous advantages over conventional stainless steel because of its increased strength and radiographic visibility, states DISA Vascular.

"Since the launch of the ChromoFlex stent in Europe and elsewhere, this product has performed extremely well,” said Dr. Starke, CEO of DISA Vascular. Dr. Starke feels confident that properly designed cobalt chromium stents used for local drug delivery, such as the ChromoFlex and ChromoFlex micro-stent, will be markedly easier to deliver and have better clinical outcomes than the stainless steel drug-eluting versions currently available.

According to Dr. Starke, the new micro-stent, for vessels 2.5-3.0 mm in diameter, will have even better deliverability features than the large-vessel version because of its extremely low profile and high flexibility. Stents for smaller vessels are in high demand in Asian and Middle Eastern markets where DISA Vascular has strong market interest.
