News Implants for Spinal Surgery

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 25 Oct 2005
A novel bone insert and a vertebral-body replacement were introduced at the annual meeting of the North American Spine Society in Seattle (WA, USA) in September 2005.

The Xpanse bone insert incorporates the proprietary demineralized bone fiber technology and demineralized cancellous chips of Osteotech, Inc. More...
(Eatontown, NJ, USA) to provide a tissue graft that is osteoinductive, osteoconductive, and osteoconforming. This bone insert expands up to 10 mm when rehydrated in vivo, providing more complete bone surface contact during orthopedic and reconstructive applications.

The GraftCage TLX is a vertebral-body replacement device designed for strength and ease of insertion. It can be implanted by utilizing existing Osteotech instrumentation for transverse spinal interbody procedures. A large opening for the insertion of fusion-enhancing materials allows for maximum graft exposure. Three titanium markers facilitate intraoperative and postoperative radiographic assessments.

"We sized the Xpanse bone insert to fit within the GraftCage TLX; however, it can be utilized alone or with other spinal implants where allograft or autograft bone would be used,” explained Sam Owusu-Akyaw, president and CEO of Osteotech. "Used together, the Xpanse bone insert and the GraftCage TLX create a unique vertebral-body spacer, allowing for maximum endplate contact, structural support, osteoinductivity and osteoconductivity, which are the four key components of a successful fusion.”
