Healing Bones Faster With Ultrasound

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 14 Aug 2006
An enhanced bone-healing system based on ultrasound technology promotes the body's natural healing process, speeding the repair of a broken bone. More...

The Exogen 4000+ is a low-intensity pulsed ultrasound device that is externally applied 20 minutes a day over the site of a broken bone. The system has been clinically proven to speed up the healing of certain new fractures by 38% and effectively healing 86% of hard-to-heal bone fractures. The system has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The new system is a modification of the previous Exogen 2000, and has been modified to incorporate user-interface modifications and design modifications to compensate for changes in electronic component availability. The system is indicated for the non-invasive treatment of established non-unions excluding skull and vertebra. In addition, it is indicated for accelerating the time to a healed fracture, for fresh, closed, posteriorly displaced distal radius fractures and fresh, closed or grade I open tibial diaphysis fractures in skeletally mature individuals when these fractures are orthopedically managed by closed reduction and cast immobilization. The Exogen 4000+ system is the product of Smith & Nephew (Memphis, TN, USA).

"Receiving FDA approval for the Exogen 4000+ bone healing system is yet another win for surgeons and patients. While the accelerated healing potential and non-union treatment capabilities of the system continue to provide the same non-invasive alternative to surgery, the design upgrades make it easier to operate further optimizing patient care,” said Mr. Ken Reali, vice president and general manager of the Smith & Nephew's orthopedic trauma & clinical therapies division.
